THE PLAYERS Championship 2026: Preview, Course Guide & Betting Outlook

Posted on March 11, 2026March 12, 2026 by bettherent

March 12–15, 2026 | TPC Sawgrass | Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida Purse: $25 Million | Winner’s Share: $4.5 Million | FedEx Cup Points: 1,000

The Fifth Major

The Florida Swing reaches its crescendo. THE PLAYERS Championship returns to TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach from March 12 through March 15. This is the PGA Tour’s crown jewel — the event with the richest purse, the deepest field, and the most iconic finishing hole in all of professional golf. THE PLAYERS is not a Major in name, but it is one in every other sense. The best players in the world gather here annually. The pressure is suffocating. The stage is enormous. And the Stadium Course ensures chaos, heartbreak, and glory every single year.

The Course: TPC Sawgrass – Stadium Course

TPC Sawgrass stretches to over 7,200 yards and plays as a par 72. Designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1982, the Stadium Course is an exercise in precision under pressure. Water hazards threaten on nearly every hole. The fairways are tight, the rough is punishing, and the greens are among the fastest and most undulating on Tour. There is no hiding here. Every weakness in a player’s game will be exposed by Sunday afternoon.

The back nine defines legacies at Sawgrass. The par-3 17th — the iconic island green — is the most recognizable hole in professional golf. No amount of preparation fully prepares a player for standing over a tee shot with the tournament on the line and nothing but water surrounding the target. The par-4 18th is equally demanding — a long, dogleg left finisher with water hugging the left side all the way to the green. Champions are not simply found at TPC Sawgrass. They are forged there.

The Field

THE PLAYERS Championship assembles the strongest field in professional golf outside of a Major. Every top-ranked player on the planet has an invitation — and nearly all of them show up. There are no soft spots in this draw. Every pairing features legitimate champions. This is the week where the game’s elite separate themselves from the merely very good. Ball-striking precision is paramount. Scrambling ability is tested relentlessly. And mental fortitude under the weight of a massive global audience is what ultimately determines the champion.

Scottie Scheffler enters as the world number one and the clear favorite. His combination of elite iron play, course management, and composure under pressure makes him the prototypical Sawgrass contender. Rory McIlroy, a former champion here, always circles this event on his calendar. Watch closely for players carrying momentum from the Arnold Palmer Invitational the week prior — form at Bay Hill frequently translates well to the Stadium Course.

Defending Champion

The 2025 champion returns to Ponte Vedra Beach looking to join an exclusive club of back-to-back winners at THE PLAYERS. History has shown that champions at Sawgrass rarely arrive by accident — they understand the course, they manage their emotions, and they make decisive swings when the tournament is on the line. Past champions and consistent top finishers at this venue deserve heavy consideration in any betting analysis this week.

What to Watch

TPC Sawgrass rewards a very specific skill set. Target players with elite proximity from inside 150 yards — approach play is the single most predictive statistic at this venue. Strokes gained putting on Bermuda grass under tournament pressure is equally vital. Players who avoid big numbers — the dreaded dunks on 17 — give themselves the platform to win. One catastrophic hole can unravel an entire week in a matter of seconds. Consistency, not fireworks, wins THE PLAYERS. Weather off the Atlantic coast can turn conditions treacherous at any point. Wind direction off the water significantly alters club selection on half the holes on the property. Monitor forecasts carefully as the week progresses.

The 17th hole will write the story of this tournament. It always does. The only question is whose name will be etched into the trophy when the final putt drops on the 18th green Sunday evening.
