RBC Heritage 2026 Recap: Fitzpatrick Wins Playoff Thriller Over Scheffler

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Matt Fitzpatrick bogeyed the 72nd hole to hand Scottie Scheffler a chance at the title. Then he birdied the first playoff hole to take it back. That is the RBC Heritage 2026 in two sentences.

Fitzpatrick led by three shots entering Sunday at Harbour Town Golf Links. He posted a 1-under 70 in the final round — steady but not spectacular — and watched Scheffler charge from behind with a 3-under 67 to pull even. When Fitzpatrick found the sand on 18 and made bogey, the playoff was set. On the extra hole, Fitzpatrick landed his approach to 13 feet and rolled in the birdie to claim his second RBC Heritage title and his second win in three starts on the PGA Tour this season.

Scheffler was the story of the back nine. He came into the final round three back and made his move with a measured, patient round that gave him every chance to win. The world No. 1 did not make a mistake when it mattered. Fitzpatrick did — and it nearly cost him everything.

Si Woo Kim finished third and took home $1,360,000. He was in the mix throughout the week and gave himself a real chance heading into Sunday. Meanwhile, Ludvig Åberg continued his strong 2026 season with another top finish, moving to -15 on the week.

Gary Woodland provided the shot of the tournament on Sunday, holing out from 204 yards for eagle on his final hole of the week. He had been in a tie for 16th before that shot moved him up the board. It was the kind of moment Harbour Town occasionally delivers.

Brian Harman had the round of his life on Saturday — a 63 that was the best score of his career at this course. It put him in contention heading into Sunday. However, he could not sustain that level in the final round and finished outside the top three.

The Champion

Fitzpatrick’s week at Harbour Town was a masterclass in sustained ball-striking. He shot 65-63-68-70, leading from the front for three rounds before nearly letting it slip on the last hole of regulation. The 63 in Round 2 was the low round of the tournament. His approach play was the foundation of everything — Harbour Town rewards players who hit greens from 125 to 175 yards, and Fitzpatrick does that as well as anyone in the field.

This is his second RBC Heritage title. He also won here in 2023, beating Jordan Spieth in a playoff. He now has four PGA Tour wins. He is the only player this season to win twice, matching Chris Gotterup, who won the Sony Open in Hawaii and the WM Phoenix Open earlier in the year.

“I just felt that they were holes that I didn’t really make my par on,” Fitzpatrick said after Saturday’s wobble. “I felt like I was making good enough swings to make a turnaround on the back nine.” That composure carried into Sunday and ultimately into the playoff.

Model Verdict

Fitzpatrick was the No. 2 model pick entering the week at 6.8% win probability. He won. Schauffele was the model favorite at 7.8% and finished outside the top 10. Si Woo Kim was not in the top five of the pre-tournament model board and finished third. The course fit numbers for Fitzpatrick — precision approach play at a low-GIR venue — supported the result exactly the way the model framed it in the Tuesday preview.
