Best Team In The League

1. San Francisco 49ers no change

Record 3-0Offense 1stDefense 22ndLast W 36-30 vs CardinalsNext vs Broncos, Sun Oct 4, 4:25 PM ET

One of the league's best offenses is the engine here, and the gap between the two sides of the ball is hard to ignore. The defense is below average, meaning San Francisco is carrying a significant imbalance — elite production on one side, a liability on the other. Rankings this high built on offensive firepower alone carry real structural risk.

Holding the top spot requires more than winning — it requires winning cleanly. The 36-30 result against the Cardinals was close enough to invite questions about whether this team can pull away from opponents it should dominate. A home date with the Broncos in Week 4 offers a chance to answer those questions, and a comfortable margin would reinforce the case for staying at number one; another narrow escape would invite doubt.

Top 4 Teams

2. Buffalo Bills no change

Record 3-0Offense 2ndDefense 19thLast W 24-16 vs ChargersNext vs Patriots, Sun Oct 4, 1:00 PM ET

A 24-16 home win over the Chargers keeps the Bills undefeated at 3-0, outscoring opponents 101 to 78 through three games. The Patriots come to Buffalo in Week 4.

3. Kansas City Chiefs ▲ 1 place

Record 3-0Offense 6thDefense 9thLast W 24-10 at DolphinsNext at Raiders, Sun Oct 4, 4:25 PM ET

A 24-10 road win over the Dolphins keeps the Chiefs undefeated at 3-0, having outscored opponents 88-50 through the early weeks. They travel to face the Raiders in Week 4.

4. Denver Broncos ▲ 5 places

Record 2-1Offense 17thDefense 8thLast W 30-26 vs RamsNext at 49ers, Sun Oct 4, 4:25 PM ET

A 30-26 home win over the Rams keeps Denver at 2-1, though the Broncos have been outscored 70-60 on the season as a whole. A road trip to face the 49ers in Week 4 will test whether that winning record holds up against stiffer competition.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars ▲ 5 places

Record 2-1Offense 5thDefense 4thLast W 35-6 vs PatriotsNext at Bengals, Sun Oct 4, 1:00 PM ET

What separates Jacksonville from the top four is thin. The Jaguars carry both a top-eight offense and a top-eight defense, and 0.1032 EPA per play — blended from this season and last — reflects a team operating at a high level across the board. The gap between them and the teams above may come down to whether they can avoid the kind of stumble that ended their 13-4 campaign with a wild card exit last year.

A 35-6 home win over the Patriots is the kind of statement performance that quiets doubters, and the Jaguars will look to carry that momentum on the road against the Bengals in Week 4.

Worst Team In The League

32. Miami Dolphins ▼ 1 place

Record 0-3Offense 26thDefense 31stLast L 10-24 vs ChiefsNext at Vikings, Sun Oct 4, 4:05 PM ET

Both sides of the ball are working against this ranking rather than for it. The offense is below average, which would be damaging enough on its own, but the defense qualifies as one of the league's weakest. There is no unit carrying the other — the drag runs in the same direction across the roster.

A 10-24 home loss to the Chiefs leaves Miami at 0-3 and sitting at the bottom of these rankings. Traveling to Minnesota in Week 4 to face the Vikings offers little comfort given the current trajectory. To climb from this spot, the Dolphins would need to show something dramatically different on both sides of the ball than they managed against Kansas City.

Bottom 4 Teams

28. New York Jets ▼ 3 places

Record 1-2Offense 23rdDefense 29thLast L 24-31 at LionsNext at Bears, Sun Oct 4, 1:00 PM ET

A 24-31 road loss to the Lions is the latest setback for a Jets squad now sitting at 1-2. They head on the road again in Week 4 to face the Chicago Bears.

29. Los Angeles Chargers no change

Record 0-3Offense 29thDefense 10thLast L 16-24 at BillsNext at Seahawks, Sun Oct 4, 4:25 PM ET

A 16-24 road loss to the Bills dropped the Chargers to 0-3, and the offense continues to be outscored badly through three weeks. They head on the road again in Week 4 to face the Seahawks.

30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers ▼ 2 places

Record 0-3Offense 25thDefense 15thLast L 16-23 vs VikingsNext vs Packers, Sun Oct 4, 1:00 PM ET

31. Tennessee Titans ▼ 1 place

Record 0-3Offense 28thDefense 28thLast L 7-12 at GiantsNext at Ravens, Sun Oct 4, 1:00 PM ET

A 7-12 road loss to the Giants is the latest setback in a 0-3 start, with Tennessee having scored just 37 points while allowing 59 through three games. The Titans head to Baltimore in Week 4.

Moving Up

16. Washington Commanders ▲ 10 places

Record 1-2Offense 14thDefense 30thLast W 33-31 vs SeahawksNext vs Colts, Sun Oct 4, 9:30 AM ET

A 33-31 home win over the Seahawks gives Washington its first victory of the season against a 1-2 record that still reflects a unit outscored overall, having allowed 92 points while scoring only 75. The Colts visit in Week 4, giving the Commanders a chance to build on that momentum at home.

10. Las Vegas Raiders ▲ 7 places

Record 3-0Offense 30thDefense 11thLast W 35-27 at SaintsNext vs Chiefs, Sun Oct 4, 4:25 PM ET

A 35-27 road win over the Saints keeps the Raiders unbeaten at 3-0, with 88 points scored against just 54 allowed through three weeks. The Kansas City Chiefs come to Las Vegas in Week 4 for what shapes up as an early-season division statement.

26. Atlanta Falcons ▲ 6 places

Record 1-2Offense 27thDefense 13thLast W 35-14 at PackersNext at Saints, Mon Oct 5, 8:15 PM ET

A 35-14 road win over the Packers gives Atlanta its first victory of the year and some badly needed momentum heading into a 1-2 record. The Falcons travel to face the Saints in Week 4.

Moving Down

17. Seattle Seahawks ▼ 14 places

Record 2-1Offense 11thDefense 2ndLast L 31-33 at CommandersNext vs Chargers, Sun Oct 4, 4:25 PM ET

A 31-33 road loss to the Commanders stings, but at 2-1 the Seahawks remain on the right side of the ledger. They host the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4 with a chance to reestablish themselves at home.

18. New England Patriots ▼ 12 places

Record 1-2Offense 15thDefense 14thLast L 6-35 at JaguarsNext at Bills, Sun Oct 4, 1:00 PM ET

A 6-35 road loss to the Jaguars is the kind of result that raises serious questions about where this team stands. At 1-2, the Patriots have been outscored 51-36 on the season, and the margin is not flattering. A trip to Buffalo in Week 4 offers little comfort, as the Bills present one of the stiffest tests in the conference.

25. Carolina Panthers ▼ 9 places

Record 1-2Offense 18thDefense 21stLast L 18-21 at BrownsNext vs Lions, Sun Oct 4, 8:20 PM ET

A road loss to the Browns, 18-21, leaves Carolina at 1-2 on the season. The Panthers now return home in Week 4 to face the Detroit Lions.
