Copperhead Bites Back: Your Complete Guide to the 2026 Valspar Championship

The Valspar Championship 2026 tees off this week (March 19–22) at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida. Known as one of the most punishing tracks on the PGA Tour, Innisbrook rewards surgical precision and punishes reckless aggression. Here is everything you need to know before the first group tees off on Thursday.

Tournament Setup

Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course is famous for its tight, tree-lined fairways and daunting elevation changes—a rarity for Florida golf. The rough is expected to be particularly lush this year, making driving accuracy the stat of the week.

The most famous stretch is “The Snake Pit” (Holes 16, 17, and 18). Statistically one of the hardest three-hole finishes on Tour, it features two long, water-guarded par 4s and a grueling 215-yard par 3.

  • Purse: $9.1 Million ($1,638,000 to the winner)
  • FedEx Cup Points: 500
  • Field Size: 135 players

Players to Watch

Xander Schauffele (+1100)

Schauffele is the deserved favorite. He is currently top 5 on Tour in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, and his consistency in Florida has been unmatched. With a staggering 83.5% make-cut probability, he is the safest “anchor” for any fantasy lineup or betting card.

Jacob Bridgeman (+2500)

While some might call him a longshot, the numbers tell a different story. Bridgeman is the current FedEx Cup points leader and is coming off a T5 at The Players. DataGolf has him as a top-five contender this week, significantly outperforming his market odds. He is a premier ball-striker who thrives on difficult, strategic courses.

Viktor Hovland (+1600)

The defending champion returns to the site of his 7th PGA Tour win. Hovland’s iron game has stabilized after a shaky start to 2026. If he can avoid the “Snake Pit” disasters that often plague aggressive players, he has a legitimate shot at being the first back-to-back winner since Sam Burns (2021-2022).

Jordan Spieth (+2500)

A former winner here (2015), Spieth’s history at Copperhead is a mixed bag of brilliance and bogeys. He remains the ultimate “Chalk Factor”—history favors his creativity on these greens, but his volatility makes him a high-risk, high-reward play.

Course History Snapshot

The last few years have proven that you don’t need to be 20-under to win here; you just need to outlast the field.

YearWinnerScoreKey Takeaway
2025Viktor Hovland-11Won by one stroke over Justin Thomas.
2024Peter Malnati-12His first win in nearly a decade.
2023Taylor Moore-10Broke through for his first career PGA win.
2022Sam Burns-17Successfully defended his 2021 title in a playoff.
2021Sam Burns-17Dominant performance, launching his superstardom.
2020——Tournament cancelled (COVID-19).

One Thing to Watch

The Iron Gap.

Because Innisbrook is so narrow, many players will “lay back” off the tee to ensure they find the fairway. This puts a massive premium on mid-to-long iron play (175–225 yards). Watch the “Strokes Gained: Approach” leaders after Thursday; the player who dialed in their distances will likely be the one lifting the trophy on Sunday.
