2026 Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches

February 26 – March 1 | PGA National Resort (Champion Course) | Palm Beach Gardens, Florida Purse: $9.6 Million | Winner’s Share: $1.728 Million | FedEx Cup Points: 500

Welcome to the Bear Trap

The Florida swing is officially underway, and there is no warmer welcome to it than the sun-soaked chaos of PGA National Resort. The 2026 Cognizant Classic — formerly known for years as the Honda Classic — returns to Palm Beach Gardens from February 26 through March 1, bringing with it one of the most demanding and unforgiving courses on the PGA Tour calendar. This is not a tournament for the faint of heart or the imprecise of iron. It is a test of nerve, discipline, and the ability to survive one of the most notorious closing stretches in professional golf.

The Course: Water, Wind, and the Bear Trap

The Champion Course at PGA National Resort plays to a par of 71 and stretches just over 7,200 yards — numbers that, on paper, suggest a manageable challenge. The course, however, is anything but. Water hazards come into play on 15 of the 18 holes, and the tight fairways and heavy bunkering punish anything less than a well-placed drive. Bermuda grass greens add another layer of difficulty, particularly when the South Florida wind picks up and makes distance control on approach shots a guessing game.

The centerpiece of the layout — and the moment that defines this tournament every single year — is the infamous Bear Trap. Holes 15, 16, and 17 form one of the most feared three-hole stretches on the PGA Tour. Water lurks on virtually every shot. Bogeys are easy, doubles are common, and rounds can be completely unraveled in the span of 20 minutes. It is the kind of stretch that reveals which players are genuinely competing and which players were merely pretending. Championships are won and lost at the Bear Trap, and it gives this event a late-round drama that few tournaments can match.

Recent weather forecasts suggest this year’s edition may see minimal wind for much of the week, which could take some of the edge off the course’s usual bite. However, the possibility of rain on Friday and into Saturday may factor into scoring conditions. Even without a fierce breeze, the architecture of PGA National ensures this will remain a stiff examination — the bunkers, the water, and the psychological weight of the Bear Trap are formidable on any day.

The Field

The Cognizant Classic sits in the shadow of two consecutive Signature Events on the PGA Tour schedule, and as a result, many of the world’s top-ranked players have elected to rest ahead of bigger upcoming tournaments. This year’s field does not include any golfers currently ranked inside the global top 25, with Ryan Gerard standing as the highest-ranked entrant in the field.

That thinner field, however, does not diminish the competitive interest. In fact, it opens the door for mid-tier grinders and course-fit specialists — the kind of players who thrive on precision over power and who relish the opportunity to claim a PGA Tour title without having to go through a Scheffler or McIlroy to do it. One name drawing considerable attention is Brooks Koepka, who has returned to the PGA Tour after his stint with LIV Golf. Koepka has name value and a Champion Course that, in theory, suits his ball-striking profile. But his return has been rocky — he has finished 56th and missed the cut in his first two starts back — and a chronically cold putter remains his most pressing concern heading into this week.

Defending Champion

Joe Highsmith owns the title of last year’s champion, having stormed from four shots back on Sunday with one of the most electric back-nine charges the tournament has seen in years. He capped it with a 20-foot birdie on the par-3 17th — in the heart of the Bear Trap, no less — to claim the title at 19-under par and punch his ticket to the Masters. Highsmith’s win was the kind of dramatic, come-from-behind story this tournament seems custom-built to deliver.

What to Watch

With a soft field, a premium on accuracy over distance, and the ever-present drama of the Bear Trap awaiting every contender down the stretch, the 2026 Cognizant Classic sets up to be another fascinating chapter in a tournament with a long history of surprising outcomes. Keep an eye on players with strong iron games, reliable proximity from 150–200 yards, and the mental composure to play the closing holes with something on the line.

The Bear Trap is waiting. It always is.
